MATERIALS & GEOTECHNICAL

GEOTECHNICAL updated 11/5/2010 by Wing Heung

Foundation Installation Plans: Forward pile installation plans, drilled shaft installation plans, and auger cast pile installation plans to Turnpike Geotechnical Engineer for concurrent review with CEI expediting review time.

Foundation Letters:  Turnpike Geotechnical Office will forward production pile length letters, pile installation criteria letters, and drilled shaft tip elevation letters for proposed bridge foundations to the CEI.  Cosign the letters for contract administration purpose and forward to the Contractor.

            Construction Vibration:

·        Coordinate with Contractor and Turnpike Geotechnical Engineer on concern with effects of construction vibration on existing buildings, and other structures such as MSE walls, and utilities.  Include PIO when neighboring properties are involved.

·        Verify that the Contractor has implemented all specifications and plans requirements.

·        Where Contract Documents require vibration monitoring by the Department, coordinate vibration monitoring schedule and locations with Turnpike Geotechnical Engineers at least 24 hours in advance to obtain such field services.

·        Forward a copy of reports submitted by the Contractor associated with protection of existing structures to the Turnpike Geotechnical Engineer.

Prestressed Soil Anchors: Prepare independent records for acceptance tests of prestressed soil anchors.  Forward acceptance test record to Turnpike Geotechnical Engineer within 2 working days after a test is completed.

Shop Drawing Approval: Verify that any required shop drawings had been approved prior to foundation and retaining wall works.

Pre-activity Meetings: Organize pre-activity meeting for major work operations prior to initiation of field activities to discuss work plan.  Prepare meeting minute documenting discussed items.  Examples of typical pre-activity meetings include:

·        Driven Piles

·        Drilled Shafts

·        Auger Cast Piles

·        Prestressed Soil Anchors

·        Earthwork

·        Concrete

·        Asphalt

·        Metals and Coating

Prepare meeting minutes on discussed details and forward to all participants and Prime Contractor within 15 working days after the meetings.

Foundation Records: Transmit all driven pile logs, drilled shaft logs, and auger cast pile logs to Turnpike Geotechnical Engineer for review within 2 working days after field work.

Material Sampling and Testing

On-Site Sampling & Testing

·       Conventional Method - The CEI (or designee) will perform on-site sampling and testing.

·       Materials Model - Turnpike Materials (or designee) will perform on-site sampling and testing upon notification/request by the CEI

Make sure to check your specific CEI Contract in order to find out which method of on-site sampling & testing applies.

Off-Site Sampling & Testing

·       Off-Site Sampling & Testing, Laboratory Testing and Asphalt Plant Sampling & Testing will be performed by Turnpike Materials (or designee)

Test Request Notification

·       When Verification, Independent Verification or Resolution sampling and/or testing services are required from Turnpike Materials, the CEI is to submit each Materials test request over the Internet at:

http://flturnpikeoperations.com/Offices/Materials/MaterialsTestRequest/tabid/208/Default.aspx

Turnpike Materials requests minimum 24-hour advance notice for all sampling and/or testing requests

Turnpike Materials will perform the requested service and report results
